“Kintsukuroi or ‘“golden joinery"/"golden repair" is a method of Japanese ceramic repair that emphasizes brokenness and repair as part of the history and beauty of an object. As a philosophy, kintsugi is similar to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect. Through medical training I have felt broken, but I do not wish to hide that brokenness. Repair and restoration has made me the person and doctor I am today.”

Hope Kramer is a third-year resident in internal medicine who has had significant experience with the trauma of witnessing and engaging in her patient's worst days. She processes her experiences of brokenness and humanity through art as a way to stay grounded.
